It's the fourth time Chipotle has raised prices in the last two years. The increase meant some customers would pay more than $1 more for their entrees once the price increase took effect in August of the same year. Chipotle Mexican Grill is testing whether automation can make customers' burrito bowls and salads. It's the second time the burrito chain has publicly announced testing automation at its innovation center. Roughly two-thirds of all Chipotle digital orders are either burrito bowls or salads, according to Chipotle. The Hyphen robot will make burrito bowls and salads for digital orders only. Simultaneously, an employee can assemble digital orders for other items, such as tacos, quesadillas and burritos, on the digital make line.

A federal agency has sued the restaurant chain Chipotle, accusing it of religious harassment and retaliation after a manager at a Kansas location forcibly removed an employee's hijab, a headscarf worn by some Muslim women. After several weeks, the harassment culminated in him grabbing and partially removing her hijab, according to the complaint. Chipotle's chief corporate affairs officer, Laurie Schalow, said the company encourages employees to report concerns, including through an anonymous hotline. One night during closing in August 2021, the manager allegedly reached out and pulled her hijab partially off her head. The lawsuit claims that Chipotle violated federal civil rights law protecting employees and job applicants from discrimination based on religion, race, ethnicity, sex and national origin.

Chipotle is paying more than $300,000 to settle allegations of child labor in Washington, D.C.D.C. alleges Chipotle let minors work over 48 hours a week and more than six straight days a week. Chipotle denies the allegations, but will adopt policies to comply with child labor laws as part of a settlement. Schwalb's office began the investigation in May 2022 after seeing reports alleging Chipotle violated child labor laws in other jurisdictions, according to the release. The investigation identified more than 800 potential violations of the district's child labor laws dating back to April 2020. Chipotle was previously accused of child labor law violations in Massachusetts and New Jersey.

Delivery orders are typically more expensive, thanks to added fees and tips for delivery drivers. But delivery orders have also become an important contributor to restaurants' revenue because customers' receipt totals are higher. Cava's second-quarter sales growth wasn't hurt by softening delivery sales, but the Mediterranean chain's full-year forecast was cautious. After same-store sales growth of 28.4% for the first quarter and 18.2% for the second quarter, Cava is anticipating same-store sales growth of just 13% to 15% for the full year. Uber said its second-quarter delivery sales rose 14%, while DoorDash's total orders climbed 25%.

To Cramer, who has experience as a restaurant owner, some of the most important factors for success are traffic and throughput. Chipotle says its limited-edition Chicken al Pastor is boosting sales and attracting new customers. Chicken al Pastor was added to its menus in March, and according to CEO Brian Niccol, one in five customer orders at the chain now include the protein. "We've got a benefit because Chicken al Pastor has really shifted some of our customers from the more expensive beef into the less expensive chicken," CFO Jack Hartung said in an earnings call on Wednesday. Chicken al Pastor isn't just cheaper for Chipotle to make, it's also helping to attract new customers, the company said. Plus, it was a fairly straightforward dish to launch because it's made using Chipotle's existing adobo chicken, which is then mixed in an al pastor marinade.

Popular steak house chain Texas Roadhouse, which is 1.6 miles from the new Chipotle, saw year-over-year traffic slide by 5.27% in April and by 3.92% in May 2023. A Chick-fil-A less than a mile from Chipotle, saw foot traffic decrease four out of five weeks in May, Placer.ai reports. "I don't see how Chipotle's brand can transfer to small towns." Chipotle announced Tuesday it has signed an agreement with Kuwait-based Alshaya Group, its first-ever franchise partner, to open locations in the Middle East next year. The Alshaya agreement marks the first time Chipotle has enlisted a local franchise retail operator as it moves into a new market. Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol told CNBC in an interview that the initial plan calls for two locations each in Dubai and Kuwait, with exact locations yet to be determined. "They've got great brands, great operations, great people programs, which just gave us confidence that they'd be able to execute the Chipotle proposition effectively in the Middle East," Niccol said. In evaluating the Middle East market, Niccol said it was important to partner up to ensure success in everything from real estate to hiring to supply chain.
